Engaging Atheistic Convictions

Bridge
What’s the point in engaging with people who claim atheistic convictions? If their worldview is such that they deny the God who gave them the very breath, reason and senses they are employing to deny what they know but suppress that truth, is there any purpose? The bible explains that whatever they believe, they will be without excuse. God’s divine nature eternal power is apparent through his creation.

From a human perspective there is no point engaging. If Cyril Smith didn’t repent he is paying the price for his perversions. However, that’s not the end. For God is rich in mercy and while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. He gave his life for all the unbelievers, rapists, atheistic abortionists, liars and perverts. Justice and mercy cannot co-exists from a human perspective but God, the creator of all things, who is truth, and love, can forgive all who truly repent.

  1. When the Bible said God’s power was apparent through his creation, people still believed the sky was a thin sheet of metal that could depart “as a scroll when it is rolled together” (Rev 6:14). Now we know the sky appears blue because of the fact that 1) Raleigh scattering bounces the visible photons of shorter wavelength to our eyes, and 2) our eyes are more sensitive to blue light than violet light. Ever since the day when Galileo found Venus to have phases, the idea of God as a creator has been in steady retreat.

    • Thank you for sharing your thoughts. An historical grammatical reading of the text that takes into account authorial intent leads to the understanding that the prophetic writings in Daniel and Revelation are figurative. They provide not a code but a picture. My starting point is not what people believe, such as the earth resting on a turtle, being flat or being a consequence of chance and time, it is what the Bible says. I could explain to you some of the accurate scientific data in the Bible. However, I suspect if you have atheistic presuppositions you will dismiss them or seek a rescue device to counter them. Let’s not waste each other’s time. Needless to say, I would encourage going to the Bible with a correct hermeneutic and consider the person and work of Jesus Christ who made a way that you may be forgiven of your sins and reconciled to God.
